October 6 - Group Study Guide

Ice Breaker:  Can you relate to the video Pastor Mike showed at the beginning of his sermon? How can you relate?

(if you missed it watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuPLxQD4akQ )

Read Genesis 25: 24-34.  Four truths are revealed about our appetites:

1.      Appetites are fine, as long as they’re not in charge.

        a.      How does this story reveal that?

        b.      Have you experienced times when your appetites have controlled you?  What were the results?

         c.      What do you think are the most powerful appetites in our culture today that threaten to control

people? What does the Bible say about them?

2.      When it comes to appetites, enough is never enough.

        a.      Agree?  Give an example from your life.

        b.      Read John 6:35 and discuss in light of our insatiable appetites.

        c.      Are there appetites in your life that you keep chasing after hoping enough will be enough, but it

                never is?

3.      Appetites say now, never later.

        a.      Esau is in a hurry to get that stew!  What is the result?

        b.      Ever run into problems because your appetites say now, never later?

1.      Anger?

2.      Debt?

3.      Sexuality?

        c.      Do you find yourself saying: “If I had a chance to do that over, I’d sure do it differently”?  How often

                 are your appetites involved?

4.      Appetites, if we allow them, can cause us to trade the ultimate for the immediate.

        a.      How did this play out in Esau’s life?

        b.      What about yours?

        c.      Are there appetites in your life right now that are tempting you to trade the ultimate for the

immediate?  What are you going to do about it?

End by praying for each other
