Jack in the Box – DEPRESSION
Ice Breaker: Have you ever asked someone “Are you ok” when clearly they weren’t? Tell the story. Have you ever told someone, “I’m fine”, when clearly you weren’t? Tell the story.
1. Series in a couple of sentences:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
2. Depression: severe despondency and dejection, typically felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of
hopelessness and inadequacy
a. Does that sound like a fair definition of depression?
b. Can you restate that in your own words?
c. Ever felt that way?
3. James 5:14 says,
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them
a. Sounds like James doesn’t like the “all good” game. Me neither. The all good game is absurd for three reasons:
i. Everyone knows you’re not all good anyways. Discuss.
ii. When you pretend you’re all good, you don’t get better (remember the green pus?). Discuss.
iii. The all good game is contagious, and it hurts other people. Discuss.
iv. How does God command against the “all good game” in James 4:6?
4. James continues:
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord…..
a. James is using oil here in a medicinal sense.
i. Should a Christian see a counsellor?
ii. Should a diabetic use insulin?
iii. Can God use medicine to heal people?
1. If you said no to the last question, do you think its ok that you are telling God what He can and can’t use to
5. James 5:15:
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well;
a. Sometimes God delivers us FROM trials and sometimes He delivers us THROUGH trials. Have you ever
seen God’s faithfulness play out through trials?
6. Sin can cause depression.
a. Is there unconfessed sin in your life holding you back?
b. Is there habitual sins or addictions in your life making a mess out of you? What are you going to do about it now?
c. Are there sins committed AGAINST you that you need to forgive and move past?
7. The cross and the empty tomb gives us hope, no matter where we’re at.
a. Forgiveness for sins
b. Healing for hurts
c. Strength for today
d. Purpose and hope for tomorrow.
e. Salvation for eternity
i. Which do you need to know most today?
