Week 2 – Straight to the Heart
Ice Breaker: What is the stupidest (or most greatly regretted) purchase you have ever made?
Read Proverbs 4:23. Discuss.
1. 3 causes for a heavy heart:
a. Yesterday’s hurt. Discuss in light of Lamentations 3:19-20.
i. What areas of your past still cause you heaviness today?
b. Today’s troubles. Discuss in light of Job 4:5
i. What areas of your life today are causing you heaviness?
c. Tomorrow’s fears.
i. Are there fears and anxieties about the future that are leading to heaviness in your life today?
2. 3 mistakes we can make about a heavy heart:
a. We can assume it’s a sin. How can this be refuted by Luke 22:39-44?
b. We can assume it’s just who we are. Refute this in light of John 10:10.
c. We can believe it’s permanent. Discuss in light of Ezekiel 36:26.
3. Three cures for a heavy heart:
a. Remember God’s goodness today. Read Psalm 103: 1-5 and personalize it. How does this passage
apply to your life?
i. Share one thing you are grateful to God for from your past.
b. Don’t give up on His goodness today.
Psalm 142 (verses 1,2,5 and 7) say: I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift
up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. I
cry to you, Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Set me free from my
prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your
goodness to me.
i. Do you need to do what this Psalmist did today?
c. Don’t count His goodness out for tomorrow!
i. Read Joshua 1:9. Commit to living in light of the truth in this verse.
