Our family is excited about the four year assignment we’ve accepted to work in Guatemala. Guatemala is a country that is poor on many levels. It suffers economically – 56% of the population lives below the poverty line, 40% of women are illiterate, and 44% of children are chronically malnourished. It suffers socially – Guatemala recently emerged from more than 30 years of horrific civil war that has psychologically scarred a couple generations. It suffers spiritually – ancient Mayan religion holds people in misery and darkness.
The greatest resource we’ve taken with us to Guatemala is HOPE. That hope is found in Jesus, who, by his death and resurrection, made a way out of both physical and spiritual poverty and brought freedom for the whole person! I (Shawn) am a nurse so I’m using my skills and experience to help people improve the health of their families and communities.
We’re not serving the poor in Guatemala on our own but as an extension of Southside Church. We are dependent on the prayers and support of people at home whom God has called as well. Thank you to all of you who are a
part of this venture with us!
