Small Group Study
Jack in the Box:  Addiction

Ice Breaker:  Have you ever experienced “false advertising”?  Like, something that didn’t live up to its hype?  Explain.

Following the ice breaker today, I think it would be good, if possible, to split your small group into smaller groups of five or less with men and women in separate groups.

1. Genesis 4:7:
…sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.

That is addiction.  Discuss.

2. What is the difference between “having a habit” and a “habit having you”?

3. Three choices you and I need to make in our battle against addiction:

     a. Light or dark.
i.Do you REALLY believe God has something FOR you, or is He actually trying to KEEP something good FROM
            you?
ii. Our spiritual enemy, the devil, has been using this line of reasoning for years.  How did he use it on Eve in the
Garden of Eden?  How did that work out?
iii. If your addiction is working well for you, then the bumper sticker is right!

Elijah said it this way in 1 Kings 18:21:

Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

Discuss.

iv. How could anyone in their right mind allow a sin to “have them”?
1. Can you think of a time in your life where something looked good at first, but ended up causing you hurt?

     b. True or false:
          i. What is your “drug of choice”?  Approval, sex, pornography, drugs (legal or illegal), gossip, video games, social
media, money, success, attention?  What are you doing to win the battle against your drug of choice?
         ii. Proverbs 28:13:
Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds
            mercy.
Discuss

iii. Why do you think churches are so tempted to pretend to be “shiny happy people”?
iv. What are you hiding in your life today?

     c. Life or death:
          i. It’s not enough to just stop doing the “don’ts”. We need to do the “do’s”!  Give examples.
ii. Moses said it this way in Deut. 30:
19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and
death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you
may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.

How can you choose life today? What are some steps you can take towards healing today?
