LENT DAY 9
No Good Thing By Steve Johnson
For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11)
It is said that our God is a God of grace and mercy; you’ve heard that before, right? In this verse, he even says that if you continue to walk with Christ that no good thing will be withheld from you.
I saw this play out with our Pastor in Haiti, Pastor Vogly. He was in his late 30’s when I first met him, had married his sweetheart almost 9 years prior, and had grown a small church of 3 people meeting in his house to over 250 (still meeting in his house). Pastor Vogly is one of those people that you can’t help but admire. His love of God, love of people and the utmost hope in his salvation through Christ were all things that drew me to this man. When I met him, he and his wife were struggling to have children and because of the superstitious nature of their culture, if you aren’t able to have children, then you must have done something wrong or have sin in your life.
Let me stop right here to say that this is crap. God is not out to get you; He wants what’s best for you. I’ve heard it said that when you ask God a question in prayer, He has 3 answers: yes, no and not yet. If you are anything like me, you tend to prefer answer #1, you will take #2 every once in a while, but nobody wants to hear #3! Nobody likes waiting.
But Pastor Vogly and his wife waited. They felt convinced that one day they would have a family and that God would answer their prayers. So they prayed earnestly. Asking the church and their friends and family to pray for them.
And pray they did. In fact, Pastor Vogly’s wife went home to her parents’ for 2 days where they prayed for her around the clock. 9 months later they had a beautiful baby girl and within 4 years, God blessed them with two more.
God was so gracious to this family and He has that same grace for you. Whether you are struggling with an addiction, a challenging relationship or maybe even trying to have a child – The Lord will give you grace and mercy – no good thing will be kept from you.
Prayer: Lord help me to remember that you are a God of grace and mercy. That you are my sufficiency. That you made me perfectly in your eyes and know the path of good things you have in store for me. Today help me to cling onto your amazing grace as I try to be more like Jesus.
