He Keeps His Promises! By Sandi Houweling

Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed; for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

But you promised!  How many times as a parent have I heard those words?!  Sometimes I had really good intentions but forgot all about it.  Other times I was completely unable to follow through on my promise due to my own schedule and limitations.

I’m so glad God doesn’t forget his promises.  He keeps his word.  When He makes a promise He has the power and strength to deliver.  Faithfulness says I will keep my word.  I will not fail you.  I won’t quit on you.

God keeps ALL of his promises ALL of the time.  He cannot lie.  Number 23:19 says “God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change his mind.  Does He speak and then not act?  Does He promise and not fulfill?”

We can count on him, depend on him and KNOW that his mercies are new every morning!  How can I know?  These 3 ways:

  1. By reading his word.  John 17:17 says “your word is truth”.

  2. By recounting all the things God has done in my life and all the times God has answered my prayers.  If He has helped me before He will help me again. (Eph 5:20 says “forget not all of his benefits”.

  3. By listening for and hearing his voice.  John 10:27 says “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me”.

We can do absolutely nothing to deserve God’s faithfulness.  He does not change.  His faithfulness does not depend on our faithfulness.  He keeps his promises even when we don’t.  It was Christ who finished the work of redemption at the cross.  Apart from Jesus, we cannot earn forgiveness.  God’s grace is offered as a free gift to all who will receive it.  It was Christ who was faithful, even unto death.  Knowing that God is faithful and that he does not change gives us the confidence that he will perform what he has promised.

What promises of God are you needing to apply today?  Make a list of some of God’s great promises to you and commit them to memory.  Here are just a few to get you started:

He will never leave you.  Deuteronomy 31:6

He will give you a hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11

He will supply all your needs.  Philippians 4:19

He gives strength to the weak.  Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives peace.  John 14:27

Prayer: Lord, Your promises are powerful and awesome to grasp.  I pray that as I read Your word, reflect on Your faithfulness, and listen for Your voice, I will step into all that You have planned for me, and I can rest in knowing that You are Truth.
