LENT DAY 32

The Unknown Depths of His Love By Leah Wiens

“Drain the Oceans” by Southside Worship:

When I turned my face from heaven when I ran the other way

When I hid from your direction and embraced my selfish ways

When my life was filled with darkness

And I thought I was alone

Even there your love pursued me even then you called me home

Now I'm caught within your riptide

As you draw me out to see

Into a never ending ocean

Where your love runs wild for me

You pull me deeper further into depths of love unknown

I can't outrun your presence

You will never let me go

Redeemer of my broken soul

Healer of my scars

Waves of unrelenting grace your love is greater far

Last Easter I had the privilege of being able to work alongside some of the members of the Southside music team to write the song "Drain the Oceans" for our church. The whole song is based around the old hymn "The Love of God," but the bridge above was written specifically with our church in mind.

The main theme of this bridge is that our God is a God who chases after us. When we were lost in our sin, God loved us and sent His only son die for us. When we feel lost, alone, afraid or ashamed, He runs after us to remind us that He is with us, for us, and will never leave us or forsake us. But the part of the bridge that I love the most is the line "You pull me deeper further, into depths of love unknown, I can't outrun your presence, you will never let me go." You see, for me, I often find it easier to believe that God sent his son to die for my sins, than to believe that He is consistently pursuing me even now, desperate to show me more of Himself, the unknown depths of His love for me and His desires for my life. It seems almost too good to be true, but the fact of the matter is that our God does not merely want to "save" us and then leave us alone. Our God is desperately in love with each of us, and He wants us to invite Him in and surrender each and every aspect of our lives to Him. Every hurt, every fear, every doubt, every task, every job, every friendship, every dream, everything. He wants to be involved in it ALL, because he loves us that much.

John 15:9 says "As the father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love," and John 15:15 says that God "calls [us] friends." In other words, God wants us to remember that He not only loves us, but He really LIKES us, and He wants to walk hand and hand with us in all areas of our lives.

Are you a little like me, and sometimes find it hard to believe that the God of the universe cares about every detail of your life? Draw near to Him today, and ask Him to show you a glimpse of his unending love for you.

Prayer: God, help me to remember today that you are always with me, that you are always pursuing me, and that you love me with an unending love. Help me to remain in your love, and surrender every aspect of my life to you. Thank you that you call me your friend.
